A man who allegedly threatened a relative with a sword has been arrested after a 13-hour standoff with Tauranga police.

Police were called to a “family-harm related” incident in Mount Maunganui on Wednesday about 7.15am.

A police spokesperson said they responded to a report of a man with a sword allegedly threatening a family member.

“Three occupants of the address exited safely upon police arrival. The man was engaging with police but remained uncooperative.”

Police said cordons were put in place to contain the address.

A number of police staff were called to help, including the Police Negotiation Team and the Armed Offenders Squad.

“Around 8.45pm, the man was tasered and taken into custody without further incident,” police said.

A 32-year-old man is due to appear in the Tauranga District Court today, charged with assaulting a person with a stabbing/cutting instrument, threats to kill, assault on a family member and a drug-related charge of possession of utensils.
