Police have been called to central Tauranga after alarm of another reported firearm in town.

Inspector Ian Brooker said police received a call from someone concerned a man was carrying a gun on 5th Ave.

Police responded but found the man was actually holding a cigarette lighter, Mr Brooker said.

The incident follows a 'high priority' response from police to a report of a man carrying a gun near the Work and Income office in Courtney Rd this morning. Read more on that story here.

''There is a bit of heightened awareness around this kind of thing at the moment,'' Mr Brooker said.
