Police abandoned a pursuit almost as soon as it started because of potential risk to other drivers.

Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Chapman said an officer travelling along Cameron Rd near 21st Ave about 4.15pm yesterday recognised a driver who should not have been driving and attempted to pull him over.

Moments after the police chase started it was abandoned because of the potential risk of undue injury to other motorists, Mr Chapman said.

The driver, travelling in a white Subaru WRX, began driving on the road's median strip and there was concern the driver would begin travelling into oncoming traffic.

Police lost the driver but were keen to hear from anyone who might have information that might help track down whereabouts of the driver, who was described as a 24-year-old man, of solid build with sandy blonde hair.
