Police say a man who allegedly tried to flee police by jumping into the Welcome Bay Estuary was caught after reports of sightings by members of the public.
Police are now thanking the Welcome Bay public for their help tracking down the man.
A police spokeswoman said officers stopped a car on Fantail Dr in Welcome Bay after being alerted shortly before 9am to people allegedly acting suspicious.
She said the occupants of the car fled on foot before one of the four were tracked down by police soon after. Police dogs and their handlers were called and found two others near the estuary.
Members of the public reported sightings of a swimmer in trouble under the cliffs opposite Curlew Cres shortly before 11am. The man was arrested a short time after.
