A store owner has been assaulted at a Tauranga business this morning.

Police were called to Sand Bakery and Cafe on Cameron Rd at 5.20am.

A police spokesperson said an ambulance has been called to check on the person who was attacked.

A member of the public who entered the shop after the assault told SunLive the store owner suffered some serious cuts to his head and was splattered with blood.

He got seven nasty punches after a man entered the shop and started arguing with him.
