A person carrying a slug gun has been arrested because they were believed to be carrying a rifle.

A police spokeswoman said armed police were called to Tauranga's CBD today to what was thought to be someone carrying a rifle.

She said officers were called to The Strand about midday and a person was taken into custody.

Officers who responded were seen with large guns dealing with an incident near Harington St.

Police inquiries are ongoing.
