As I trekked down the stairs to discover Kaiate Falls at the weekend I became intrigued by what else I had ignored over the last three months.

A few people have recommended I check out the spot since I returned to the Bay but I've put it on my 'to do list', which hasn't been a priority in recent times.

Even though I know how beautiful New Zealand can be and how many idyllic locations are in our backyard I guess my expectation was a little low. When I finally made the visit at the weekend, however, I was actually impressed.

I automatically thought how this could be my go-to swimming spot in summer - if only the water quality was safe to swim.

It also prompted me to think about all of the other locations I've been told to visit but have chosen to neglect.

I love the outdoors and love exploring new areas but my lack of interest of checking out my own backyard can only be blamed on laziness, time available and wanting to stick to what I know, which is the walk to the Mauao summit and the view it offers.

From now on though, I'm planning to make an effort to explore new areas and I'm looking forward to seeing the natural beauties that surround me.

I've been told to make a trip to McLaren Falls - having not been there since I was a child - and pack a picnic and head out to Te Puna Quarry Park for a day but I'm very interested to hear about spots locals would recommend I visit.
