AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd has failed to keep his name secret in relation to allegations he lied about his drug use while applying for a pilot's licence.

Name suppression for the famous rocker lapsed at Tauranga District Court this afternoon, where Rudd was expected to defend a charge that he made a misleading statement when he applied for a Class 2 medical certificate.

Rudd is accused of lying about his previous drug use to obtain the certificate, which was required to enable him to renew his pilot's licence.

He is defending the Civil Aviation charge at a judge-alone hearing.

The charge stems from an allegation that the man failed to declare his previous drug use and discharge without conviction in relation to cannabis possession.

Rudd has admitted a charge that between August 2012 and April 2013 he failed to maintain an accurate record in a pilot's log book.
