Experienced broadcaster and sports journalist Peter Williams is joining the Bay of Plenty Times as a sports writer and columnist.

Now resident in Mount Maunganui, Williams will initially combine his weekend role presenting 1News with reporting and sports opinion in the Bay of Plenty Times, but he's due to wind down his 45-year broadcasting career later in the year.

"This is a great opportunity for me in this vibrant and booming city. It has a great sports environment, some fantastic competitors and is becoming home to more and more elite athletes.

"I'm really looking forward to covering sport in the Bay at all levels from international to interschool."

Williams has been a broadcaster and journalist since the 1970s and has reported on many of the world's great sport events including the Olympic Games six times, the Rugby World Cup on seven occasions and numerous Black Caps tours and Cricket World Cup campaigns.

NZME regional editor Scott Inglis said he was delighted to have Williams writing for the paper and website.

"Peter is an experienced and well-respected journalist and we look forward to him covering local sports events and telling your sports stories."
