A person has died in a crash on State Highway 29 on the Kaimai Range.

Head of Western Bay of Plenty road policing Senior Sergeant Mark Pakes told the Bay of Plenty Times at the scene that the two vehicles involved in the crash were a heavy vehicle and a car.

He said both vehicles had ended up on the opposite side of the road down a bank.

The person who died was an occupant of the car, Pakes said.

Police were called to the crash, at the intersection with Old Kaimai Rd, about 2.20pm.

The highway is closed and diversions are in place. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The intersection is considered to be among the most dangerous in the Western Bay of Plenty.

Diversions will be in place "for some time" and motorists are asked to delay travel if possible.
