One person suffered serious injuries after a car hit a pedestrian on State Highway 30, Whakatāne.

A police spokeswoman said they were notified of the incident in the Coastlands area at 4.40pm yesterday.

The road was closed while the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene, she said.

The road was reopened at 8pm.

A St John spokeswoman said a patient in a serious condition was transported to Waikato Hospital via helicopter.
