One person has been flown to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition following an incident at a football match in Pāpāmoa.

Papamoa FC president Maaka Nelson confirmed a player was injured at a match being played at Gordon Spratt Reserve on Sunday.

"From all accounts it was an innocuous challenge," Nelson said.

A St John spokeswoman confirmed they were called to the Pāpāmoa sports field at 11.32am.
