Pāpāmoa Pharmacy to keep core postal services after NZ Post review

Key postal services will remain available at Tara Rd Pharmacy in Pāpāmoa after NZ Post reversed an earlier decision to withdraw them.

The decision followed strong community feedback and a national review process.

People will be able to send domestic mail and buy stamps and prepaid envelopes from the pharmacy.

International mail services will continue to operate from the main NZ Post branch in Pāpāmoa.

The pharmacy had been among dozens nationwide earmarked to lose postal services as part of NZ Post’s urban retail network review. The move sparked widespread concern – particularly among older residents and people with mobility challenges who rely on convenient local access.

After submissions from affected communities and reviewing updated use data, NZ Post reassessed a number of decisions around the country.

Of the 26 outlets that requested reviews, 10 were successful, including Pāpāmoa.

Sites in Masterton, Paekākāriki, Christchurch, Ashburton, Oamaru, New Plymouth, Ōpua, Pukekohe and Karori in Wellington were also successful.

However, not all services will be reinstated, with some stores continuing without parcel collection or lockbox facilities.

An NZ Post spokesperson said the reviews took into account community feedback and new information against the company’s assessment criteria.

“In a small number of cases, new information materially changed a store’s position and we have been able to offer retaining some or all NZ Post services,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that details of individual assessments could not be shared because of commercial sensitivity.

In Pāpāmoa – one of the fastest‑growing communities in the Bay of Plenty – the decision has been welcomed by locals who raised concerns about losing everyday services as the suburb continues to expand.

“I know how important convenient local postal services are, especially for older residents and those with mobility needs,” said Bay of Plenty MP Tom Rutherford. “While not every service has been retained, keeping domestic sending, stamps and prepay envelopes at Tara Road Pharmacy will make daily life easier for many locals.”
