Rain won't stop kids play their sport. Photo / File

Kiwi kids are tough cookies, alright.

My weekend was spent following children's sport - all of which seemed to go ahead in some pretty rough conditions. I never heard any complaining from any child I came across at any point of the weekend, only excitement to get on the field or the court with their teammates.

Kiwi kids love their sport and would rather play in pouring conditions, in the mud and get cold, than not play at all.

On Saturday I overheard parents talking about how their daughters had played netball in wet weather conditions on Saturday morning. One of girls mentioned getting a win, 'so it was fine'.

On Sunday morning, my 9-year-old and his U9 side and their opponents, played league in, what was at times, pouring rain. They weren't even the youngest playing on the day.

Parents were waiting to hear if the kids' games would be cancelled but at 8am it was announced all was still go.

Parents were asked at the fields if they wanted to pull their children out of the game because of the conditions - and it was at that point that just about every child piped up saying they wanted to play.

Though it was cold, there was never any complaints about the weather from any child on the team.

I caught eyes with my son a few times during the game and he had a massive smile - he was loving it despite coming away from it soaking wet and a with few grazes.

And I totally get it.

Wet weather can definitely dampen people's moods and being forced to stay inside probably doesn't help - so it's no wonder kids will jump at the chance to get outside and play around in the mud, with approval!
