Instead of the lines running underground or across the Maungatapu Bridge, residents will have their views impaired by two poles up to 35m tall.
Yes, it may sound a bit like nimbyism (not in my backyard!) to complain about views being impaired, but it's a serious consideration - not just for the locals whose houses overlook that section of the water, but for all people who enjoy the view of the harbour, which I argue would be most Tauranga residents.
The harbour is one of our greatest and most obvious natural assets here in the city, along with Mauao and our beaches.
It seems a shame to mar that beautiful view with two large structures like these when there are other alternatives, even if they are more costly.
Choosing the cheaper option I think is a very Kiwi way of approaching things.
We seem to be hardwired to go for the best bargain, rather than what will be best in the long run - what will have the most benefits (both tangible and intangible) for the community, longevity, and what will be most visually appealing.
That's not a bad thing. In fact, most of the time, it's a great trait.
But when it comes to long-term decisions, more factors need to be taken into account than just cost.
Preserving the beauty of our harbour, and other natural assets should be our number one priority.
Future generations will thank us for our foresight.
