One person is in critical condition after an incident in Awakeri, near Whakatāne, this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to an altercation between two people at a property on State Highway 30, Awakeri, about 4.30pm on Thursday.

Eastern Bay of Plenty Area Commander Inspector Nicky Cooney said one person appeared to have received critical injuries.

One person has been arrested after the incident.

“The person taken into custody is assisting police with our inquiries. Police are not currently seeking anyone else regarding this matter.”

Hato Hone St John said one rapid response vehicle and an operations manager were sent to the scene about 4.25pm.

They referred any further inquiries to police.

A nearby resident told the Herald people had been coming in and out of her house, saying they had seen emergency services racing up the road.
