One person has died after a two-vehicle crash on Main Rd in Katikati.

A police spokeswoman said police were notified of the crash near the intersection with Jocelyn St just after 4pm and a power pole had come down on the road.

Initial indications were that one person had suffered serious injuries, she said.

Police later confirmed the seriously injured person had died but no other details were available.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area with traffic diversions in place.

As of 7pm NZ Transport Agency said a small section of SH2 in the Katikati township between Fairview Rd and Beach Rd remained closed.
