One person is dead following a crash on Te Puna Road, near Tauranga, early this morning.
The single-vehicle crash occurred just before 4.30am.
One other person in the car sustained critical injuries, police said in a statement shortly after 6am this morning.
A Bay of Plenty District Health Board spokeswoman has since confirmed, as at 11am, that the 34-year-old Tauranga man is in a stable condition at Tauranga Hospital.
She said the man was not in the hospital's intensive care unit.
Meanwhile, the Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
Four Fire and Emergency New Zealand vehicles also attended this morning's incident.
One person was extricated from the crashed vehicle, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokewoman said.
Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the fatal crash.
