Fire crews are working with tools to rescue one person trapped in a car after a collision with a bus in Welcome Bay, Tauranga.

One person is critical after a car and bus crash at Welcome Bay, Tauranga.

Emergency services were alerted to the crash on Welcome Bay Rd around 6.15pm.

Fire crews from Tauranga, Pāpāmoa and Mount Maunganui, as well as ambulance and police are attending.

“There is one person trapped in the car,” Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern shift manager Josh Pennefather said.

“We have three fire trucks and two support vehicles in attendance.”

Police said one person in the car is in a critical condition. The occupants of the bus were not seriously injured.

“We are working with our rescue tools to get the person out of the car,” Pennefather said.

The Serious Crash Unit has been notified, and Welcome Bay Rd is likely to be closed for some time.

Diversions are in place between Kairua Rd and Water Lane.
