Old cellphones long forgotten are being brought back to working order as part of a drive to help Starship Foundation.
In Mount Maunganui, Zespri workers have got a head start on 'Bring a Phone to Work Day' which is being held around the country tomorrow.
Zespri is one of 400 businesses nationwide
that has registered to have its employees bring in their old phones for the cause.
The Starship Foundation has partnered with recycling company Folamh to refurbish and onsell the old phones to developing economies around the world, with proceeds going directly towards funding Starship's National Air Ambulance Service.
Phones past repair are recycled.
"By asking organisations to donate their old mobile phones, not only will they help the environment, but they will help provide a vital service to critically ill and injured children around New Zealand as well," Starship Foundation CEO Brad Clark said.
Although Starship has nominated tomorrow as Bring a Phone to Work Day, businesses are welcome to choose any day in June to take part.
Organisations interested in taking part in Bring A Phone To Work Day should visit www.starship.org.nz/phone for more information.
