The weekend's floods caused a number of Mount Maunganui shops to miss out on the start of the school holiday rush.
Mount Maunganui PostShop was one of a number of main street businesses heavily affected. Staff spent all weekend cleaning, sorting stock and fixing damage.
Owner Clint Wishnowsky said hehad been called at 5.30am on Saturday by the people who deliver the mail.
"They told me they couldn't get to the back of the shop the water was that deep. I came down straight away and started trying to rescue stuff.
"We had about 100mm in the back and 10mm in the front, all our computer terminals have been damaged, we're operating on a tightrope at the moment. It caused several thousand dollars worth of damage."
Mr Wishnowsky said the Kiwibank ATM at the front of the store was "absolutely cooked" and would be expensive to replace.
He was glad most mail had been unaffected, with the only damage found being to a couple of packages that had sat on the floor. "We ended up taking a couple of hundred litres of water on Saturday with a Rug Doctor and the cleaners went through on Sunday to soak up as much as they could."
Some systems were down yesterday morning, such as international postage and money orders, but Mr Wishnowsky hoped the store would be back at full capacity tomorrow.
