The two tracks leading to the summit of Mauao at Mount Maunganui will be closed for at least a week from Monday.

Tauranga City Council announced today the Waikorire and Oruahine tracks on Mauao will be closed from December 5 while the Waikorire track is resurfaced ahead of the busy summer season.

The work is expected to take five days but is weather dependent and may run into the following week.

The Oruahine track should only be closed for the first two days of work.

The track closure was originally scheduled for November 7 to 11, but was delayed while the council reviewed the methodology with the contractor to ensure safety on the difficult terrain.

"It was important to us to get the resurfacing done ahead of the busy summer period to ensure visitors and locals alike can enjoy the reserve safely," Tauranga City Council's manager of parks and recreation Warren Aitken said.

The closure will be in effect from the stone steps at the Mount Maunganui Beach entrance up to the summit. The base track will remain open and unaffected, and the public will still be able to access the Mauao summit from the Pilot Bay entrance, via the 4WD track.
