A Tauranga building company has taken out the country's top title in the Registered Master Builders awards for the "beautifully crafted home" it built in Mount Maunganui.

Shaw Builders won the supreme 2015 House of the Year title, at a gala dinner on Saturday night, for what the judges described as a "well-designed home that exudes luxury with views and sun, polished Turkish stone tiling and superb negative detailing throughout", built in Mount Maunganui. It was designed by Brendon Gordon Architecture.

Dave Shaw said the win was great for Tauranga and it was humbling to win the title.

He said the owners, who did not want to be identified, had been told of the win and thought it was great.

Shaw Builders had now won 54 awards, but this was the one Mr Shaw had been aiming for since first entering eight years ago.

"This is just the top of everything we've won, and something I've always wanted to win.

"We didn't go up there expecting to win, we just thought 'whatever happens, happens'. I couldn't believe it when we won, it's a bit like winning Lotto - but way better, because it's something we've worked hard to achieve."

As well as winning the House of the Year title, Shaw Builders also took out the Craftsmanship Award and the Westpac New Home over $2 million category.

Judges said Shaw Builders must congratulate themselves for their fantastic results.

"The well-designed upper-level outdoor area can be closed off from the prevailing winds with strategically-hidden sliding doors and a remote-controlled louvered roof.

"The luxurious ambience upstairs is complemented by a stunning, large gas fireplace."

The judges said another standout feature was the ensuite, with its polished marble tiling offset against dark-stained cabinets enriching the light-filled space.

"This large, elegant home is well-balanced with a superb palette of materials, and has been designed and built for comfortable living," judges said.
