Most of the Mauao base track will reopen today at 5pm, though walkers will still not be able to complete the total loop.

Slips and scouring closed the base track after Cyclone Cook in April.

Debris has been removed from slips and 150 tonnes of rock was put in place to rebuild and resurface the track.

The track was accessible from the Mount Maunganui Beach side of the mountain.

Walkers and runners would not be able to complete the whole loop and would have to turn back as they neared Pilot Bay.

There might be short-term closures early next week during daylight hours while the last of the repairs were completed.

Meanwhile, Papamoa Hills Park tracks remained closed as serious rain events delayed work to rebuild the tracks.

The park has been closed to walkers and runners since October last year when a pine harvest operation began.

Boggy ground, slips and water damage prevented the tracks opening in April as previously planned.

It was unknown when the park would reopen.
