Amanda Sutcliffe

Each week we chat to a local woman about her work

Name: Amanda Sutcliffe
Job title: Business owner, director and chartered accountant!
Company: Amanda Sutcliffe & Co Ltd

What does your job involve?

By trade I am a chartered accountant offering accountancy services to the public. We specialise in taxation, GST and preparing financial statements, but we also do a lot of consultancy work.

Having recently become self-employed, it has become very hard to define what my job involves. Every day I find a new role. I spend a great deal of time meeting with clients trying to develop relationships, also looking for ways to market our business and reach new clients. My job involves continuously looking for new ways to add value to my clients' businesses.

What's your role's most challenging aspect?

Time management will always be the most challenging factor for our business. We sell our personal time and there is never enough time in the day to get everything done. When clients contact us we pride ourselves on replying to our clients quickly and providing a high level of service where they feel they have received value for their money.

What's your proudest work moment?

The opportunity to start our own business. It's very rare for an accountancy practice of this size to come up for sale in Tauranga and even more rare for a young couple to be selected to take it over. It's also not very common that your partner has the same qualifications as yourself. I am really lucky to have Cam work alongside me every day. I'm proud of the way we face challenges together.

What experience have you had to prepare for your role?

Following the completion of my business management degree at the University of Waikato I entered the accountancy profession in Tauranga starting as a graduate. While gaining practical experience I sat my professional exams including a six-hour exam to be accepted into the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants.

After working as a senior accountant training and managing staff, I felt I had the skills necessary to open my own practice. I gained a lot of experience learning from others in the business community. Joining groups such as the Rocket Young Professionals, the Chamber of Commerce and BNI have given me the confidence to interact with business associates and clients.

What's the best piece of career advice you've received?

Accountancy isn't just about the work you put out but about building and developing relationships with clients. Clients' lives are never smooth sailing and this has a direct impact on their businesses. You need to know what's going on in their lives to offer them the best solutions and advice possible.

What's the most important thing your current role has taught you?

In the first few weeks of starting the business we learned the importance of having great staff; being able to rely on your staff to keep the business ticking along.

How would you describe your work wardrobe?

A mix of professional and smart-casual pieces. I love wearing suit pants and a blazer but making it more casual by wearing a cotton striped T-shirt or jersey underneath.
