Lynette Lochhead Job title: Director/designer Company: Design on James
What does your job involve? Coordinating all aspects of the interior and exterior of a home in away that reflects the client's personality, budget and the way they live. This involves colour co-ordination, furniture specification, drapes, rugs, lighting ideas, cushions and placement of artand accessories. Anything that makes a room functional, interesting and a pleasure to be in. It's all about the ambience.
What's the most challenging aspect of your role? Helping clients to understand the value of quality textiles and well-manufactured furniture, especially when there is so much inexpensive product imported that ends up in landfill in a short period of time.
What's your proudest work moment? When a client beams with excitement at all the possibilities, and at the end of the project when they say, "We couldn't have done it without you." As a designer, I have access to so much more than you see in retail outlets.
What training/experience have you had to prepare for your role? I trained back in 1992 for three years under the guidance of Sylvia Sandford, then built my business up over the years. I opened Design on James 10 years ago and before that was Lynette Lochhead Interiors.
What's the best piece of career advice you've received? Listen to your gut feeling and act accordingly. Always have manageable goals - small and large.
What's the most important thing your current role has taught you? You need systems. Make lots of lists and have a good listening ear.
How would you describe your work wardrobe? It is variable. I love natural fibres that breathe, like wool and linen teamed with silk scarves, costume jewellery and shoes that take me anywhere. I respect fashion designers with creative flair and attention to detail. I purchase a few special pieces each season, which last for many years and can interact with the rest of my wardrobe. I particularly love coats and jackets as they finish an outfit.
