An Auckland pair charged with being involved in a police chase from Papamoa to Maungatapu in a stolen Subaru Legacy yesterday remain behind bars this afternoon.
Shane Devon Ngaro, 27, and Te-Ranei Emere Yvonne Newton, 28, faced a raft of charges when they appeared in Tauranga District Court today.
That included Ngaro facing charges of reckless driving, failing to stop for police, driving while disqualified (3rd or subsequent offence ), theft and unlawfully gets into a motor vehicle.
Newton faced charges of theft, shoplifting, and unlawfully gets into a motor vehicle.
The theft charge relate to the defendants allegedly stealing $94.70 worth of petrol from BP station in Rotorua on Sunday.
Officers cordoned off an area of Maungatapu and with the help of a police dog handler from Rotorua the defendants were tracked and located and arrested, police further alleged.
Newton and Ngaro, who are yet to enter pleas to the charges, were both remanded in custody.
Ngaro, who did not seek bail, was remanded to appear in the Auckland District Court on August 5 in relation to these alleged offences and four unrelated active charges.
Newton was refused bail by Judge Peter Rollo who said he found just cause for her continued detention, citing a concern she may offend while on bail and/or fail to turn up to court.
Newton was remanded to appear in the Manukau District Court on August 6 when she will also face a raft of unrelated charges.
