Power was knocked out to residents in Welcome Bay last night as a man sat trapped in his vehicle while emergency services worked to remove live lines from around him.

The man had been driving a flat-deck style truck when he lost control in the rain, crashing head on into a power pole near the top end of Kaitemako Rd about 10.30pm.

Police at the scene said the man was not injured but was unable to leave the vehicle until power authorities had ensured any live lines from the damaged pole the truck had collided with were no longer a threat.

The road was blocked as police and firefighters worked to clear the scene.
