A man facing a firearms charge has been given name suppression for a week so he can appeal against a district court order lifting it.
The man - who has details of his name, address and occupation suppressed - appeared in front of two community magistrates in Tauranga District Court yesterday.
He pleaded not guilty to a charge of illegally possessing a firearm found in his house in July.
A status hearing into the case will be heard on January 26, 2005.
His lawyer Bill Nabney asked magistrates Heather White and Kevin Hurley to continue name suppression because publishing his client's name could jeopardise his right to a fair trial on this charge and other unrelated charges.
The magistrates adjourned for a short time to consider their decision. On their return, Mr Hurley told the court there was no reason to continue suppression because the firearms charge was unrelated to the other issues before the court.
However, he gave the man seven days to appeal.
