A 54-year-old man injured in a serious assault is now in a stable condition at Tauranga Hospital, a Bay of Plenty District Health Board spokesman says.

Police and ambulance services responded to reports of three males fighting on Maunganui Rd yesterday afternoon.

A police spokeswoman confirmed police were called to the scene about 2pm, on the corner of Banks Ave and Nikau Crescent.

One person was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition, a St John spokeswoman confirmed.

St John was on the scene after receiving a call at 2.08pm.
