A man found seriously hurt after being left alone in a court cell has died.

The 32-year-old man was foundin the cell at Tauranga District Court on Wednesday. He was taken to Tauranga Hospital in an ambulance, in a serious condition.

Western Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton said police were liaising with the man's family and "extended their sympathies to them during this time".

Police are investigating the matter, which has been referred to the coroner.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority said it had been notified of the incident and it was likely they would investigate, as it investigated all deaths from police custody.
