UPDATED 1.49pm: A man has been taken to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition after being hit by a car and rolling under a bus.

A witness told a reporter at the scene outside Fraser Cove Shopping Centre the man had got off the bus and ran in front of the bus when he was clipped by an oncoming car.

The impact of him being clipped by the car sent him rolling under the bus, which was believed to be stationary at the time.

The car's windscreen has been smashed and there was blood on the road.

Traffic is backed up past Merivale on Fraser St.

A police northern communications centre spokesman said police were called to a report of a collision involving a person and a bus outside Countdown on Fraser St at 1.07pm.

EARLIER: Emergency services have blocked off part of Fraser St after a report of someone being run over by a bus.

The person is believed to be in a serious condition after being hit by a car and then run over.

A passer by said the situation looked serious as St John ambulances and police attended scene outside Fraser Cove Shopping Centre.
