A 23-year-old man was flown to hospital today with a seriously injured ankle after hurting it playing sport.

The Tauranga based Trustpower TECT Rescue helicopter was dispatched to Motiti Island where the accident happened.

The man was treated and flown to Tauranga hospital for further treatment.

The helicopter was called due to the location being an Island.
