A man seriously hurt when he was knocked unconscious has been flown to Tauranga Hospital.

The 32-year-old man had been on Matakana Island when he became the victim of an assault about 9.30pm yesterday.

The man reportedly fell heavily, hitting his head on concrete and was knocked unconscious for some time.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called and an onboard St John's medic stabilised the man's condition before he was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Helicopter crew used Night Vision Equipment to help with the rescue.
