Man dead following water-related incident near Moutohora Island, Whakatāne

A man has died after a water-related incident near Moutohora Island, Whakatāne.

Emergency services were called around 9pm on Saturday after a man had been recovered from the water in an unresponsive state after jumping off the side of a boat.

Police Search and Rescue co-ordinated the response, with Coastguard Whakatāne volunteers attending the scene and a helicopter transporting the man to Tauranga Hospital.

Police said CPR was performed but efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

The death isn’t being treated as suspicious and will be referred to the coroner.
