A Tauranga motorist is facing driving and cannabis offences after being clocked at speed and crashing near the Domain Rd interchange.
The 33-year-old defendant, who appeared in Tauranga District Court yesterday, faced charges of driving while disqualified, failing to stop, reckless driving, unlawfully getting into a vehicle and possession of cannabis.
Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders said the driving charges stem from an incident on the new section of the Tauranga Eastern Link about 10pm Monday night, when the driver was allegedly clocked driving a speed and failed to stop for police.
The defendant is also accused of fleeing the scene after crashing and was eventually located by a police dog at a commercial yard.
He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on August 11.
Last month a man was clocked by a speed camera travelling on the same Te Maunga to Papamoa section of State Highway 2, at 200 kilometres an hour in an illegal car.
Police are vowing to crack down on motorists using the Tauranga Eastern Link as a 'speed playground'.
