Police have charged a man for a Hamilton hit-and-run that left a pedestrian in a serious condition after tracing the vehicle’s movements through a series of traffic cameras to a neighbouring city 99km away.

Officers responded to the scene of an accident on Raymond St around 3.15pm yesterday following reports a person had been hit by a vehicle that had fled the scene.

The victim was transported to hospital by ambulance and is in a serious but stable condition.

A police spokesperson said a 35-year-old man has now been arrested in relation to the incident after officers traced the vehicle’s movements through the Kaimais towards Tauranga.

Investigators monitored the driver’s journey out of Hamilton through local traffic cameras, arresting two occupants on Redwood Lane, Tauriko, Tauranga at 7.20pm.

The man will appear in the Hamilton District Court today, where he will face a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the accident to get in touch through 105, either online or over the phone, referencing the file number: 260104/7786.

Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111, referencing the same file number.
