Police have arrested a 59-year-old man in relation to a late night hammer attack on a Tauranga store owner.

On Wednesday night a man entered the Quality Food and Spices Store on Cameron Rd, welding a hammer at the store owner in what has been described as an attempted robbery.

Police have today announced an arrest of a 59-year-old man, who was expected to appear in Manukau District Court today charged with assault with intent to rob.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner said offenders to think carefully before attempting similar offending.

"Police are committed to investigating incidences such as these thoroughly and holding offenders to account."

Similar offenders were either servicing or were about to serve lengthy jail sentences, having taken minimal amounts of cash or product during the robberies, he said.
