Tom Paekau discusses his new role. Made with funding from NZ On Air.

Four schools in Tauranga have new leaders this year.

Principals can make all the difference to the atmosphere among staff and students, and the school's success as a result. So what difference will these new heads make?

In this series, Local Focus video journalist Jaden McLeod meets the new principals and asks what passions drive them to bring the best out of their young people.

Tom Paekau says his new role as principal of Merivale School in Tauranga is providing him with the opportunity to grow as a school leader.

He took up the position from new Labour MP Jan Tinetti earlier this year, having previously spent nine years as principal of Rangiuru School in Te Puke.

"I decided to come to Merivale School as I saw it as an opportunity to further my career path as a principal," says Paekau.

"I was brought up by a solo mum. I can relate to some of the children that go through this school."

Paekau says he is passionate about supporting young people to see the best in themselves.

"We are in an environment where there is some inequality, I see my role as the person to provide opportunities so that all children have equal opportunity for growth in the school."
