Matt Dalton discusses the challenges of his new role. Made with funding from NZ On Air.

Four schools in Tauranga have new leaders this year.

Principals can make all the difference to the atmosphere among staff and students, and the school's success as a result. So what difference will these new heads make?

In this series, Local Focus video journalist Jaden McLeod meets the new principals and asks what passions drive them to bring the best out of their young people.

Matt Dalton assumed the role of Aquinas College principal just two months ago. He says it has been a challenge to adapt to his first principalship.

Before his current role, he served as a member of the senior leadership team at Rotorua Boys' High School.

Starting at the school, Dalton quickly discovered what he calls the AC spirit, the unique culture of the college.

"I pay tribute to the people who've come before me in terms of leadership and teaching and families who have been through the college because they've established that culture."
