Tauranga needs better infrastructure as soon as possible, says a reader. Photo / File

Tauranga needs better infrastructure as soon as possible, says a reader. Photo / File

If as reported (January 11) that it is expected that by 2050 Tauranga's population will have increased by 258,000 and reportedly require an additional 34,000 new homes. Simple maths tells you that that equates to an average of about 7.5 residents per household.

The organisations behind the Transport System Plan (TSP) did not appear to take into account this simple equation as nowhere in New Zealand does in excess of 7.5 people live per household.

We require new houses, new roads and other infrastructure so it's time for the Government to deliver on its promise to commence the Northern Arterial bypass ASAP.

Empty buses

I hate to bring this up again, but being a responsible citizen, I can't let it pass.

Sitting in front of a bakery at the Avenues end of Cameron Rd at 2pm Tuesday January 12 a number of us were dazzled by the number of yellow buses travelling each way so decided to count.

In the five minutes that followed we counted eight buses, six empty and two with one passenger each.

Say each bus is a 30-seater, that represents a seat occupancy of less than 1 per cent.
