I think the mandating of the Three Waters Reform has driven yet another nail into the coffin of democracy.

Irrespective of whether it is the right way to go with water, the way it is being thrust upon the nation is the total opposite of democratic process.

The councils and general public were met with an overwhelming ''no''.

This was also the same with the Māori wards proposal, which was also met with a resounding ''no'' in a petition and the nation's opinion was ignored and the proposal was made into law.

We now have two instances of a dictatorial government exercising undemocratic method to achieve its ends.

We are doomed. Should this go ahead then the nation will be descending into either communism or a dictatorship.

Share Lotto win

I was shocked when I heard the latest big Lotto prize was $42 million.

I am sure the winning family will choose to do good with the proceeds. But right now, in the middle of a devastating pandemic, nobody should be able to win so much in a single prize.

Regrettably, this keeps happening while workers are losing their jobs, and families are stretched to their financial limits.

Kiri Gillespie: 'Three Waters mandate makes laughing stock of councils'

Why not share the total Lotto prize money every week and offer sensible prizes, still attractive enough for ticket buyers?

Imagine what a difference it would make if the recent prize was shared out as 10,000 prizes of $4200 or if 4200 prizes of $10,000 went to families.

Morally, Lotto needs to be refreshed right now. Later when the virus has left us, Lotto can simply be reset to its current format.

Wrong message

There are times when we all have to accept something which offends our personal principles and values, and we have a right to uphold our views no matter how much they are opposed or challenged.

But this is not time for such, especially if we are a teacher, a health professional, a minister or a mayor.

These people are role models for society and refusing to be vaccinated is not acceptable.

It sends the wrong message to those who look to them for influence and guidance, and they are not worthy to hold any position of responsibility. If they lose their job because of their principles, then so be it.
