Bellevue resident Jill Whimp was happy to give to the Bay of Plenty Times Christmas Appeal when Sandy Steel knocked on her door last week.

Bellevue resident Jill Whimp was happy to give to the Bay of Plenty Times Christmas Appeal when Sandy Steel knocked on her door last week.

The final can drive for the 2014 Bay of Plenty Christmas Appeal will take place tonight.

Bay of Plenty Times staff and Tauranga Community Foodbank volunteers will take to the streets of Tauranga South collecting donations of food or personal hygiene products for the charity.

Volunteers wearing blue Bay of Plenty Times T-shirts or foodbank badges will knock on doors around Sixteenth, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Ave as well as Fraser St, Devonport Rd and Grace Rd between 5.30pm and 7.30pm. This year's can drives saw 424 items collected in Greerton and 705 cans collected in Bellevue.

If you will not be home or do not wish to be disturbed but would like to donate, please leave the food in a bag on your doorstep. If a collector does not knock on your door, donations can be dropped off at the Bay of Plenty Times office or any branch of Westpac Bank.

As of Friday, more than 8000 items had been donated, along with more than $18,000 cash, bringing the total donated to $34,650.95. Individuals, families, schools, businesses and community groups donated more than $206,000 worth of food and cash during the past three appeals. A total of $86,496.95 was raised last year.
