The scene of the truck and trailer crash on State Highway 2 north of Katikati this morning.

State Highway 2 has reopened after a truck and trailer rolled north of Katikati this morning.

The incident, near the intersection of Lindemann Rd, was reported to police about 6am.

The truck was earlier righted to a normal position while the trailer remained on its side down a bank near the highway. The highway is now open under Stop/Go traffic management.

Earlier, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency said the road would remain closed until vehicle recovery could be completed. Motorists were advised to delay their journey or allow extra time for long detour via Matamata and the Kaimai Ranges.

A St John spokeswoman said three ambulances and one rapid response unit responded was sent to the scene.

"St John treated and transported six patients to Tauranga Hospital – one in a moderate condition and five in a minor condition," she said.

The road is blocked and will remain closed until it can be removed, police said.

A contract worker at the scene told a reporter only one vehicle was involved in the incident.

There was no traffic delay near the scene with contractors diverting traffic at Katikati township, the reporter said.

"Motorists are being told they can only travel as far as Phillip Walter Dr."

A contract worker at the scene said lots of vehicles were turned around earlier this morning during rush hour traffic.

Three police vehicles were at the scene.
