A Welcome Bay man who attacked his partner punching her in the back of the head, then tried to throttle her before abusing her over several hours, faces a jail sentence.
Brian Jeffrey Currie, 41, in Tauranga District Court yesterday pleaded guilty to a charge of male assaults female - a
charge which attracts a maximum sentence of two years of imprisonment.
Judge Peter Rollo, who convicted Currie and remanded him on bail pending sentence on January 17, said this was a serious incident, particularly when it involved throttling the complainant and he wanted a full pre-sentence report.
Court documents reveal that on September 21 while at home Currie got angry with the victim over a comment she made, and punched her in the back of the head.
He then followed her into the lounge and pushed her down on to the couch holding her down by her shoulders, until she managed to free herself by kicking him.
When the victim went back to bedroom, Currie followed her and pinned her to the bed by putting his hands around her throat and squeezing until she could not breathe properly.
She again kicked him off her.
He continued to abuse her for several hours, punching, kicking and pushing her around the house.
At one point he threw a cold cup of tea at her.
The victim eventually was able to leave the address and Currie was located by police on October 12.
He stated the victim knew how to "push his buttons".
As result of the assault the victim sought medical attention for sore ribs and she suspected cracked ribs.
She also suffered swelling and bruising on her arms and face as well as a sore jaw and back.
