A Tauranga man who went drinking on Mount Maunganui beach and cut off his community detention ankle bracelet has been jailed for two months.
Luke Priest, 21, of Windermere pleaded guilty to a charge of wilful damage and two breaches of community detention in Tauranga District Court yesterday.
Priest wassentenced to two months' community detention on November 1, which included a curfew from 6pm to 6am, a ban on drinking alcohol and also required him to wear an electronically monitored ankle bracelet.
But on November 30 the security firm monitoring the ankle device detected that Priest was absent from his address for several hours. He was then seen the next day drinking on Mount Maunganui beach.
During the drinking session he cut off his ankle bracelet and threw it into the sand then left the beach.
Priest told police he just wanted his community detention sentence to be over.
Judge Christopher Harding gave Priest his wish. He cancelled his community detention sentence and ordered him to pay $1226.87 reparation to replace the bracelet.
