A 'once in 10 year' weather event didn't stop Whangamata Real Estate championship golf pennants team from breaking a 26 year golfing drought.

Last won by Whangamata Titoki golf club in 1994, the shield is the prize for a six rounds eight golf club teams event in the Waikato region.

The six man pennants team demolished the opposition winning all 12 games in the semi and finals on Sunday, September 27 on the Titoki course.

The competition has Waikato's premier golfers competing four rounds at four different courses over three months. Covid-19 delayed the 2020 competition.

The semifinals match against Tahuna was played in blizzard like conditions. Forty millimetres of rain fell in two hours with greens and fairways flooding.

The afternoon final against Te Kowhai saw the course transformed, sunshine but winds making ball control difficult.

All 12 matches over the day resulted in wins for the Titoki team.

Three members of the squad, Alan Smith,Leigh Goodman, and Mike Batters also played one round each in the earlier competition rounds.
