It has been three long years.

The Bay of Plenty Steamers last won back-to-back ITM Cup matches in August 2011, when they defeated Canterbury and Southland.

They have a chance to equal that record today when they take on Auckland at Rotorua International Stadium from 2.35pm.

The Steamers registered their first victory of the season last weekend against ITM Cup strugglers North Harbour, 21-14.

Auckland will be a much tougher task for the Steamers but the Bay will have plenty of positives to take into the match.

The Steamers defence last weekend, especially in the second half, was much improved compared to their opening four games.

Steamers' coach Kevin Schuler said the players had rested well after a big schedule last week and were fired up for today's game.

He said they would need to be really physical against the big Auckland pack.

"First thing is we have got to be pretty confrontational," he said. "And from our point of view we have just got to be confident in our systems and structures ... and build some pressure."

He said after their victory last weekend, it would give them a lift knowing that first win of the season is already in the bag.

"The good thing now is a little bit of a weight will be lifted off their shoulders and maybe [today] we will see some real expansive Bay rugby, too."

The Steamers side is similar to the one which beat North Harbour.

The biggest change will see captain Culum Retallick return to the starting side after coming off the bench last weekend.

Steamers danger man Tino Nemani will also return to the wing while Leroy Van Dam will start at fullback, after a good performance last weekend.

Meanwhile, Auckland coach Paul Feeney has made four changes to his starting lineup to face the Bay. Auckland scored 25 unanswered points to steal victory against Wellington last weekend.

Youngsters Blake Gibson and Leon Fukofuka are promoted to the starting XV for the first time, after performing solidly off the bench against Wellington. Ben Lam replaces the injured Vince Aso on the wing.

Liaki Moli's strong cameo from the bench also sees him return to start in the second row.
