Plans to penalise drivers parking in Tauranga's CBD with instant fines have been canned, for now.
A statement from Tauranga City Council released late yesterday confirmed that parking officers will not ticket people for dangerous tyres from today, as per the original intention.
A council spokesman said the council would release more information about what will happen after today soon.
The decision made last week to issue instant $150 fines to droers of cars deemed dangerous because of reasons including bald tyres received much public backlash.
Ironically, the announcement about bald tyre checks due to start from today prompted councillor Catherine Stewart to email council chief executive Garry Poole asking if it was an early April Fool's joke.
