Tauranga-based charity the Cambodia Charitable Trust is hosting boutique screenings of the movie Girl Rising in art house cinemas throughout New Zealand, starting with opening night in Tauranga on May 27.

Directed by Academy-nominated Richard E. Robbins, Girl Rising shares the inspirational stories of nine girls in developing countries, whose lives are being transformed through education.

Prize-winning authors put the girls' remarkable stories into words and renowned actors give them a voice, to portray the tremendous challenges and near-impossible odds they have overcome to pursue their dreams.

Starting with a story from Cambodia, the film then moves to stories from Haiti, Nepal, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Peru, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan.

¦Girl Rising screens at Rialto Tauranga on May 27, at 8pm. Tickets $20.
